ACTIVITIES: 2012 programme leaflet further information on the 2012 programme
The year runs from February to December. Our main activity is a monthly meeting. Its format consists of a talk (usually illustrated) or demonstration (our speakers cover a variety of subjects); a monthly competition comprising ten classes covering flowers, cacti, potted plants, fruit, vegetables, and flower arrangements in which points are accumulated during the year (see competition rules); a sale table; refreshments; question time; and a raffle. We aim to give information on open gardens and similar events of interest.

At the AGM in March trophies are presented to the class winners. This evening is combined with a “Members’ evening” at which we may have a short talk from a member, then a buffet supper.

In February, we take part in an annual Quiz with Ascot Horticultural Society, the winner claiming the Alistair Fosdick trophy. The two clubs take it in turns to host this event which also includes a buffet supper. When Ascot host the Quiz it is held on their meeting night, second Wednesday of the month, at King Edwards Hall, North Ascot SL5 8PD.

We have a photo competition with three classes, and a £5 garden voucher for the winner of each class.

A one-off competition, e.g. grow the heaviest onion, is staged with judging dependent on the month relevant to the produce a £5 garden voucher goes to the winner.

We run an annual outing. Recent venues have been Kew Palace and Gardens (2009). Borde Hill House (2010) and Hever Castle (2011). The coach meeting point is at the Recreation Ground, Broomhall Lane, Sunningdale. There are usually spare places on the coach so visitors can also join in.

A Plant Sale is organized for May and a Bring and Buy Sale for September each year. These take place in the Car Park behind the hall before the monthly meetings.

Our year rounds off with Christmas Dinner on the first Thursday in December. For several years this has been held in the Montgomery Suite at Chobham Golf Club, GU21 2TZ.
