HISTORY:

Our Association appears to have begun life early in 1936 as "Sunningdale Professional Gardeners' Association".  Membership was men only then, peopled by the gardeners of the big houses in an area within a five mile radius of Sunningdale.  Membership was five shillings for Head Gardeners and two shillings and sixpence for Under Gardeners. It took just two weeks to change the subs to 2/6d. for all.  Although nothing in the rules had prevented them, women were actually encouraged to join after July 1945 when it was recognized that more were taking up gardening as an occupation.

The club has flourished under a series of Committees, Chairmen, and Secretaries.  Gradually we have built up a set of trophies, most in honour of past members.  These are keenly contended each year.

At some point (which is not totally clear, but may be related to the demolition of big houses and their gardens to make room for more dwellings) we became "Sunningdale & District Gardening Association"; and from 2009 we now style ourselves as SADGA (which is easier to fit onto cheques!).

We are still investigating our history - if you think you have any information that might help in recreating our story then please get in touch.
